Refresh-able Braille Device
In collaboration with Vision Empower, a not-for-profit organization incubated at IIIT Bangalore, this project aims to enhance the user interactions for a refreshable braille device.
About one-fourth of the world's blind population lives in India. 8.8 Millions of 36 million blind people in India, only 5% Receive assistive technology support. Children with visual impairment need specialized resources such as braille book and assistive technologies to have equal opportunities in education as their sighted counterparts. Lack of resources creates a barrier in learning how to read and write for students with visual impairment and increases the number of dropouts from schools. Refreshable braille display was developed to provide anywhere-anytime access to braille books to students.

This project, as mentioned, aims to design new interactions and improve upon existing interactions to increase the overall usability and usefulness of the device. As a part of the project, a user study was conducted with 12 visually impaired students learning about task completion success, navigational flow, use of shortcuts to access features, and onboarding design for first-time users. The study was analyzed using affinity analysis to identify usage patterns and areas of improvement. These findings were further converted to design decisions which led to identifying new features such as undo, bookmark and automated scrolling, new onboarding design, designing of a suitable content-interaction mapping, and new interactions for accessing advanced features. The video showcases the details of the design process, new features, and interactions designed for accessing these features.
